Disability Inclusion ♿

Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I celebrate the achievements of persons with disabilities, and honor their resilience and strength in the face of adversity.

But at the same time, I acknowledge that there is still much to be done to ensure that persons with disabilities are fully included and respected in our society.

They are often left behind when it comes to accessing basic needs like healthcare, education, and employment. Their voices are too often ignored, and their rights are not always protected.

On this day, let's commit to making disability inclusion a priority in our society. Let's work together to break down barriers and create a world where everyone can fully participate and contribute.

Let's show people with disabilities that they are valued members of our community, and that their voices and perspectives are welcome.

Let's make sure that the Sustainable Development Goals are truly inclusive of persons with disabilities, so that no one is left behind. United in action, we can create a better world for everyone.

NB: The respectful terminology to address persons with disabilities is not:
Disabled ❌
Physically challenged ❌

The respectful term as recognized by the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities is "Persons with Disabilities" ✅

In my next post, I'd walk us through some of the respectful terminologies to use when talking to, or about Persons with Disabilities; till then, remember: Disability rights are human rights.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities ♿
